I actually remember when The Last Airbender came out in 2010. It came out the same year as Avatar by James Cameron, causing them to drop the full title as the movie is based on Avatar: The Last Airbender from Nickelodeon. I actually watched the whole series not long ago, so I wanted to see this movie eventually even though I heard it was really bad.
The movie is based on the first season of the cartoon. Sokka and his sister Katara find a young boy trapped in ice. They soon learn this boy is actually over 100 years old, but he has the body of a 10-year-old and the mind of one too.
His name is Aang, and he got frozen shortly before his country of the air nomads were victims of genocide by the Fire Nation. The former fire lord knew the new avatar would be of the air nomads, so he wanted to eliminate the new threat. Aang is the only person capable of bending all four elements.
He’s quickly hunted by Prince Zuko, an exiled prince of the Fire Nation. His father has banished him until he can capture the Avatar. And the young prince is quite motivated to get back home and with honor.
Overall, The Last Airbender is a horrible take on a beloved TV series. The casting was white washed for the most part except for the Fire Nation. The acting was horrendous. And the story goes from a pretty straightforward take and then goes to pure garbage of its source material. Nickelodeon definitely made a huge mistake by allowing this movie to be made.
