Inauguration of Rutherford B Hayes

In January 1877, Republicans made an unwritten deal with Democrats to ensure the confirmation of president-elect Rutherford B. Hayes. Hayes had lost the popular vote, but won the electoral vote. Conservative Democrats wanted Hayes to take American soldiers out of the South, so they could take over again politically. Hayes did as he was told, and black Republicans were disenfranchised.
