It was a little funny to see Byleth added to the roster as I had just finished Fire Emblem: Three Houses right before Byleth was announced for the game. A lot of Smash fans were upset that yet another Fire Emblem character was on the roster. But is anyone shocked?
Like Three Houses, you can pick Byleth to be male or female. Like Robin and Corrin, I find the female Byleth to be vastly superior.
I will say, Byleth is a very unique fighter for not just the Fire Emblem cast but Smash in general. She’s sluggish, so she’d easily lose to Sonic in the speed and agility game. She also doesn’t have a counter special move like most of the Fire Emblem fighters.
But Byleth does have plenty of power to her moves.
Her special moves are based on the legendary weapons in Three Houses. The Sword of the Creator is her main weapon. As a special move it can catch enemies jumping over head. Not a lot of damage, but it can stop a foe from getting too jumpy.
It also has an insane reach to grab a platform. Knocking Byleth off the stage is easier said than done.
She also has Claude’s magic bow.
Which is what Kirby wields when he takes Byleth’s power. It’s pretty powerful but takes some time to charge. Timing is key but I found it really helpful in team or battle royale matches. One on one, most people see it coming a mile away.
She also has Dimitri’s special lance and Edelgard’s powerful axe. The axe especially is no joke. You really don’t want to be on the other side of it.
Her final smash is okay, but nothing special and easy to miss. You basically capture someone in front of you, and the goddess Sothis and your Sword of the Creator do the rest.
I was actually really happy with how Byleth turned out. She really made me think about maining her instead of Palutena. So Byleth, Bowser, and Palutena are my top fighters for the most part.
