Fun Fact: When Coffee Was Banned By the Pope

A popular story about coffee (which may or may not be 100% true) is that the Catholic Church had opposed coffee as the “devil’s drink.” Coffee came from lands with a Muslim-majority and was quite popular there as well, which caused some Catholics to believe it was an “invention of Satan.” Pope Clement VIII apparently liked coffee so much that he thought it was a shame to let only Muslims drink it.
