Ridley has had at least a cameo role in every game in the series. He was actually a boss in Brawl, but now he’s a real fighter. In Japan they call him “Captain America” because only Americans really asked for him. Metroid has a very small fanbase in Japan, so you have to imagine a lot of them weren’t very happy for Ridley to join the cast.
Ridley was a tough character for me to imagine as a fighter before the game came out. Mainly because he’s giant in the Metroid games. He’s much smaller now, but he’s a “heavyweight” in many ways.
But he does have some trick moves and agility to him. His down-special move, skewer is one of the strongest attacks in the game. But you’ll need a lot of skill to get it to land properly. Ridley certainly does better in chaotic team matches or battle royales.
His final smash is easy to miss but if you trap a foe, Ridley will take them to space and throw them on Samus’ ship.
Then he takes a second to look.
And sure enough, a giant beam of plasma energy unleashes.
Enough to take the ship down and probably you along with it. It’s an okay final smash in my opinion.
Kirby gets Ridley’s plasma breath when he takes his power. He shoots a series of galactic fireballs but I never found these to do much good.
While he’s far from my favorite fighter, I did like playing as Ridley. I am a fan of the Metroid series, so I’m glad to see Ridley finally make it. It was about time someone besides Samus was a member of the roster.
