Since he was from Xenoblade Chronicles, I wasn’t really excited to see Shulk show up for the first time in Smash 4. He obviously returns for Ultimate. But the more I played him, the more I got used to him as a fighter.
While he has a sword, he’s much different than most sword based fighters. A lot of his moves are slower. His slashes are not quick and graceful like Marth and Lucina, but I suppose he’s a little quicker at it than Ike.
But like the Fire Emblem cast, he has a counter move. Actually one of the best ones. It almost creates a tiny vortex and traps enemies for a brief second. Shulk’s counter is one of the few that can typically hit more than one fighter with ease. I actually won a sudden death match against two people with the same move doing this.
His Final Smash, Chain Attack is ok. He calls his buddies from his game and they all work together to defeat typically one unlucky fighter. It’s okay, but it’s easy to miss with this one.
When Kirby takes Shulk’s power, he gets no hat or wig, but Shulk’s sword. He gets to copy his power to adjust various attributes for a short time. For both Kirby and Shulk, these powers should last longer than they do, especially the ones that don’t increase any offense.
While he isn’t my favorite fighter, I actually won the majority of my battles with Shulk. So he’s good in my book.
