The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part (2019 Film) Review

The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part movie poster

The Lego Movie was a good animated film I remember seeing about 5 years ago. It’s amazing it has been about five years or so since the first film. Granted there has been a few spin-off movies, one of which (Lego Batman) I have seen. I didn’t care that much to see it in theaters earlier this year, but they didn’t need my help as it did pretty well. Though much smaller than the original film, so I suppose Warner Bros. wasn’t too happy with it, I guess.

Lucy and Emmet Brickowski The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part

The film takes places “years later” where Emmet Brickowski and Lucy now live in a dystopian desert-like world. Though Emmet is far more optimistic than Lucy is. He still sees the rainbows and the happy sunshine. She sees nothing but bitterness and pain. Emmet is just happy to have Lucy as his girlfriend and he’s also thankful for the friends in his life.

General mayhem The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part

But things change when an “alien” race finds their world. A nearly unstoppable alien officer named General Mayhem requests the greatest warriors and leaders from their world. Nobody in the land wants to accept the offer of traveling to this new realm. But Lucy among others are taken anyway, with Emmet left behind.

Queen Watevra Wa'Nabi The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part

Lucy and her crew meet Queen Watevra Wa’Nabi whom is the ruler of the Systar System. This shape-shifting monarch isn’t very clear on her message. Lucy along with Batman and the rest think she’s up to no good. She has a wedding planned, which most think is the time where everyone will be doomed once the magic words are said. Their only hope is Emmet, and boy do they need some help. Luckily Emmet meets Rex Dangervest, whom teaches him how to be stronger and tougher. Even though Rex knows what he’s dealing with, Emmet might not be up to the task.

The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part

Overall The Lego Movie 2 is a pretty good animated film, but it just isn’t quite up to the original film. I think one of the best parts about the first Lego Movie was that we didn’t expect it, and that’s what made it so much fun. This one is silly, but rarely is it silly and smart at the same time. I think Warner Bros. might have realized that they might have gone overboard on the whole Lego movie thing. Somewhat like the Lego video games, the first (Lego Star Wars) was really cool and unique, but how many of these can we get in a half-decade?

Score: B-
