Jaime Lannister is one of my favorite characters in the whole series. So complex and unique, not many characters in fiction that can rival his story. When he was a teenager, the Mad King drafted him into his Kingsguard. When King Aerys II wanted to burn King’s Landing, Jaime killed him with his sword. While many wanted him to join the Night’s Watch, he becomes the “Kingslayer” but remains on the Kingsguard when his soon-to-be brother by law Lord Robert Baratheon becomes king. While he never seemed to like Robert, he obviously enjoyed his time on the Kingsguard.
And we find out that his sister Cersei, is not just his Queen but his secret love. Bran Stark walks in on them, and he pushes Bran out of the window, almost killing him. Showing that Jaime would do almost anything for Cersei.
He also is the only member of House Lannister that loves Tyrion like a member of the family. He doesn’t blame Tyrion for his mother’s death like Cersei and his father Tywin did. He even tries to fight Ned Stark in the streets of King’s Landing to get Tryion out of imprisonment.
I loved the moment when he got captured by the Northern army. This was the time everyone hated Jaime and really wanted to see him fall. But since Arya and Sansa were in King’s Landing, they kept him prisoner.
He escapes (sort of) but ends up in the hands of House Bolton, a northern house that isn’t so loyal to House Stark. One of Roose Bolton’s men takes his sword-hand off when he ruins his fun with Brienne of Tarth. Jaime helping Brienne really made me like him, and showed everyone that there was more man under him than monster.
He returns to King’s Landing with a not-so-warm welcome. Cersei isn’t really pleased that he lost his hand, his father is horrified but tries to get Jaime to leave the Kingsguard and take up his birthright at Casterly Rock.
He betrays his father’s wishes and frees Tyrion when he is deemed guilty (but actually innocent) in the death of King Joffrey.
He soon is fired from the Kingsguard by his own secret son King Tommen. He fights mostly for Cersei after that. But he leaves his sister when the army of the dead arrive past the wall. Daenerys Targaryen almost has him hanged, but Brienne convinces everyone to spare him.
He knights Brienne in a beautiful cermony. They fight bravely against the Night King’s army. Then they show each other their love, before Jaime breaks her heart so he can return back to Cersei for stupid reasons.
While he has to kill Euron Greyjoy to get to her, he is reunited with Cersei. While his plan seemed to be to get her out of the city and probably to Essos, both of them are crushed when the castle crumbles on them. Which is kind of poetic, they came in the world together and they left it the same way.
