One of the most interesting characters on the show, I’ve always liked him for what he was. When the series begins he’s the Master of Whisperers on the Small Council. Essentially being a spymaster for whoever is the King. He first served Aerys II, but King Robert not only spared him but kept him on. He seems to have a good relationship with Ned Stark.
And he pleads Lord Eddard to join the Night’s Watch and take Cersei’s bargain. His words do get through to the honorable Lord Stark, as he does what Cersei does, but not for his own life, but for Sansa’s life. Too bad Joffrey changed things on that deal for the worst.
I liked how he an intense rivalry with Petyr Baelish, though nothing really ever happened. Both characters are doomed by two totally separate instances.
Varys does respect Tyrion Lannister and the imp’s role as Hand of the King. Varys knows the Seven Kingdom needs wise leaders, and Tyrion is certainly one of them.
So when Tyrion is sentenced to death, Varys along with Jaime Lannister get him out of the city and in the safe lands of Essos. Varys risked everything for Tyrion’s sake, but all for his master plan. To put Daenerys Targaryen on the Iron Throne. Which makes total sense to Vary’s ultimate goal.
When he meets the Mother of Dragons, she almost has him either exiled or killed, but he manages to convince her otherwise. He appears to be very loyal to her.
But when she shows signs of madness, Varys is super happy to learn that Jon Snow was born Aegon Targaryen and is the rightful ruler of the Seven Kingdoms. But Jon tells him that he doesn’t want the Iron Throne. While most people missed the importance, but Varys was probably going to have one of his “little birds” poison Daenerys’ food. Luckily for the Dragon Queen’s sake, she was not in the mood for eating.
But Tyrion betrays their friendship and tells his Queen about Varys’ treason. For he is burned alive by Drogon. In the books, Varys is not really after the “peace of the realm” but putting a supposed Aegon VI on the throne. Fans think this Aegon is the not the son of Elia Martell but someone in a maternal Blackfyre line and Varys is related to him somehow. This book story proved to be too complicated for the show writers, so Varys keeps his “good” nature here.
