When Christopher Columbus first arrived in the Americas, he arrived on an island he named Hispana in Latin and La Isla Española (The Spanish Island) in Spanish. Its modern-day name is Hispaniola but it’s known better as the land mass that comprises both the Dominican Republic and Haiti.
