The role of executioner was often not taken out of fear of retribution from the friends and family of the condemned. Thomas Derrick had forced himself upon a woman and was pardoned by the Earl of Essex if he took the job of executioner. The Earl of Essex ended up on his chopping block when he decided to plot a coup against Queen Elizabeth I of House Tudor.
