Hulk: Where Monsters Dwell (2016 Film) Review

Hulk: Where Monsters Dwell movie poster

Twenty years ago, superhero movies were hit or miss. But that all changed with Marvel’s Iron Man in 2008 and the birth of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now there have been bad superhero films after 2008, but the majority of them have been excellent whether it’s been from the works of Marvel or DC comics. Smaller made-for-Blu-ray animated movies have come out since then and DC has been better than Marvel here. Though I did really like Planet Hulk and this held some promise. I don’t know everything about Doctor Strange (who is more of the hero of the story) so I figured this would help me there.

Dr strange vs nightmare Hulk: Where Monsters Dwell

On Halloween night, a batch of kids end up at Doctor Strange’s house. They cross paths with his monsters and are saved by The Sorcerer Supreme and The Incredible Hulk. The monsters that were on the loose were all human, but were twisted into monsters by spiritual forces. The mastermind is the dream demon Nightmare who Doctor Strange knows very well. Doctor Strange is very concerned that the shifts in the forces of nature have given Nightmare the power to hurt many around him. In the dream realm, Nightmare is extremely powerful.

Hulk buster Bruce Banner vs regular hulk Hulk: Where Monsters Dwell

Doctor Strange learns that Hulk is his prime target. Doctor Strange is forced to take Bruce Banner in the dream world. However man separates from monster there and The Hulk is rather angry with puny Bruce Banner. Bruce takes the power of the dream world to create a Hulkbuster suit (Iron Man) to protect himself from the monster within his soul. If he loses, then Nightmare will be nearly unstoppable even against a team like The Avengers. It’s up to Doctor Strange, Bruce Banner, and The Hulk to save New York. and the rest of the world.

S.H.I.E.L.D. Paranormal Containment Unit Hulk: Where Monsters Dwell

Overall I thought Hulk: Where Monsters Dwell was a not-so-surprising disappointment. While most superhero movies can be watched by all ages, it seems they couldn’t decide whether this one was for little kids or fans of the comics. I thought Nightmare was stupidly over-powered and not that great of a bad guy. I did learn of the S.H.I.E.L.D. Paranormal Containment Unit and its members for the first time. They are like the undead Avengers and their role is rather moot in the story. None of these animated movies have been as awesome as what’s in the MCU but they have been far better than this one.

Things I Like: Arya Stark (Game of Thrones)

Arya Stark sees king Robert first time game of Thrones HBO

Arya Stark was one of my favorite characters in the show. She’s the youngest daughter of Lord Eddard Stark and Lady Catelyn Stark (Tully) but the most tomboyish by far. She’s also the closest Stark child is to Jon Snow, as both of them always felt like the black sheep of the family. She wants to be a fighter early on, to which her father Ned Stark doesn’t approve.

Arya Stark sword training game of Thrones HBO

But he does hire a skilled swordsman to be her “dancing teacher” so she could be happy. While her training her didn’t seem to help her much, I liked how Syrio Forel died to protect her. Though he had the chance to take a fallen metal sword. Never understood the logic there.

Arya Stark sees ned executed game of Thrones HBO

She’s there when Ned Stark loses his head. I thought this added well to the drama, though a man of the Night’s Watch prevents her from actually seeing the carnage.

Arya Stark amd gendry Night's Watch recruits game of Thrones HBO

And he tries to get her back to Winterfell by making her act like a boy recruited for the Night’s Watch. That’s where she meets Gendry, King Robert Baratheon’s bastard son. It is kind of neat that their fathers were best friends and they happened to meet by fate. Though King Robert had a lot of them, so maybe that’s just mild luck.

Arya Stark meeting tywin Lannister game of Thrones HBO

But instead of going to Winterfell she ends up almost being caught by the Lannisters. I liked her scenes with Tywin (whom thought she was a “common” Northern girl), it was fun to see the two of them bond in a way.

Arya Stark annoying the Hound game of Thrones HBO

But she ends up later with the Hound, in a fun adventure across Westeros. And by fun, I mean funny. Doesn’t work out too well for Sandor Clegane as Brienne of Tarth defeats him and almost kills him.

Arya Stark in essos game of Thrones HBO

She ends up going to Braavos to become a “Faceless Man” at the House of Black and White. A religious cult of sorts, but it did teach Arya (bitterly and painfully) how to be a great assassin and face-changer.

Arya Stark kills house frey game of Thrones HBO

I think most people loved when she took out Walder Frey and his house at the Twins, the very sight of the Red Wedding. That’s where most of her cool assassin stuff ends.

Arya Stark kills the Night King game of Thrones HBO

As she’s more of a soldier defending her home when the Night King comes. I did scream in joy when she turned him into chunks of frost. I didn’t see her being the one.

Arya Stark fighting for queen Daenerys Targaryen game of Thrones HBO

But everything after that was disappointing. She should have been the one to kill Cersei Lannister and/or Daenerys Targaryen but she kind of passes it all up. Leaving that job to bricks, and Jon Snow’s dagger.

Arya Stark sailing into the unknown game of Thrones HBO

At the end of the series, she leaves the country and sails far west. Probably reaching George R. R. Martin’s version of the Americas. Makes me wonder if the books will hold the same fate for her or not.

Things I Like: Bran Stark (Game of Thrones)

Bran stark and jon snow game of Thrones HBO

Brandon “Bran” Stark is the second youngest son of Eddard Stark in Game of Thrones. Even at the start of the series, Bran certainly is different than all of his brothers. He doesn’t seem to be good at fighting, even Arya Stark proves herself to be better at it, to his anger.

Bran Stark finds out secret of Cersei and Jamie Lannister game of Thrones HBO

But his dreams are crushed when stumbles upon Queen Cersei and her brother Jaime Lannister in a passionate moment. For which the Kingslayer throws him out of the window. While the throw was meant to kill, Bran survives.

Bran stark hodor summer fleeing Winterfell game of Thrones HBO

But without the use of his legs, forever. He stays in Winterfell when all the horrible things happen to his family. And he flees Winterfell when Theon Greyjoy takes it for King Balon of the Iron Islands. They decide to journey north, past the wall.

Bran stark and meera Reed game of Thrones HBO

And Bran learns he can not only just take control of animals, but even Hodor and his mighty strength. He learns that he is the protege of the Three-Eyed Raven, a master of magic that is the main rival of the Night King.

Bran stark taught by three eyed raven game of Thrones HBO

Which gives Bran the power to travel in the past, in which he can walk like a normal person. I loved these flashback scenes, and I wished there was more.

Bran stark cursed by night king game of Thrones HBO

But Bran messes everything up by going into a vision of the Night King, which the Night King somehow knows he’s there and leaves a mark on him. They storm their hideout, killing the Three-eyed Raven, Hodor, and Summer. Good going doofus!

Bran stark and meera Reed saved by Benjen game of Thrones HBO

But his uncle Benjen Stark as a “good zombie” rescues him and sends him back “home” to Winterfell. This is where we learn that Jon Snow’s real father was Prince Rhaegar.

Bran stark returns to Winterfell game of Thrones HBO

But after that, Bran becomes weird and moody. He claims to be someone different, the Three-Eyed Raven, though it’s obvious he’s just talking about the title, and not the spirit.

Bran stark tells Theon Greyjoy goodbye game of Thrones HBO

And we learn that Bran knew the outcome of everything. That’s why he showed no fear against the Night King, he just waited on Arya.

Jon Snow kneeling to King Brandon stark game of Thrones HBO

And he tricks everyone with “freedom of choice” and somehow gets elected king. I didn’t believe his “And I don’t want to be king” line. It is interesting to note that King Torrhen Stark bent the knee to Aegon the Conqueror, and now Aegon VI (Jon Snow) bent the knee to Brandon I of House Stark. But also, Jon came from the lineage of both men, and I’d rather he had become king instead.

Bran stark king of the Six Kingdoms game of Thrones HBO

But well played Bran Stark. I would have never guessed that you’d be sitting on the Iron Throne…I mean the Iron Wheelchair.
