In 1924 British explorers George Mallory and Andrew Irvine attempted to climb Mount Everest, the world’s tallest mountain. However the pair failed to make it back home alive. They were sighted (and bodies were recovered in 1999) only a few hundred meters from the top. They may have been the first people to have reached the summit, however nobody knows for sure.
