The movie Babe came out in 1995 and almost everybody lost their minds over it. It was the same trend you saw all the time in the 1990s, when so many movies had talking animals, and this one definitely helped spread the popularity of the idea. It also seemed a little too much like Charlotte’s Web, although the author of the book Babe is based on came up with it organically.

You’ve got an old white farmer with a farm, and he goes “E-I-E-I-O” or something like that. Ok, maybe I’m pulling your leg. Then comes the idea of a runt pig that should be slaughtered, but the farmer takes mercy on the little piglet.

Instead of becoming bacon, Babe becomes a courageous pig who somehow ends up acting like a substitute sheepdog.

Speaking of the actual sheepdogs, there are plenty of them in the movie, and they’re absolutely adorable.

I don’t remember a lot about the movie, but I do remember that Babe was pretty good at what he was doing. “That’ll do, pig. That’ll do.”

It was a smashing hit for most people back in 1995, and it’s hard to believe the movie actually earned seven Oscar nominations and one win. I always thought of it more as a kids’ movie, so it’s surprising that the Academy Awards honored it the way they did.
I may be the one person who has never seen the movie!!
But I love talking animals!
