French croissants are technically viennoiserie pastries, being directly based on the Austrian pastry called kipferl. There’s a false story that they were created after the Austrians had defeated the Ottoman Empire in a particular battle. The French croissants originated during the early 20th century.
Fun Fact: Croissant Etymology
Croissants are literally from the French word for “crescent.” Which is obviously inspired by its shape. Not all croissants technically are crescent-shaped as there were periods of history where different shapes and inexpensive ones made with margarine were popular, especially in a 1920s France.
