While every U.S. President has been Commander-in-Chief to the United States Armed Forces, only a very few had a very active role in literally leading a military force while in office. The only real sitting president to lead troops in the field was George Washington. He did so during the Whiskey Rebellion in the 1790’s.

Fun Fact: Highest Military Rank
The highest military rank in the United States is the General of the Armies. George Washington obtained this rank but never knew it. It was given to him posthumously in 1976.
Fun Fact: Bushrod Washington
While politically independent, George Washington considered his views close to the Federalist Party. His Vice President John Adams was an official member of the party. Due to their friendship, it is no surprise that Adams made his first Supreme Court nominee one of Washington’s nephews.
Fun Fact: The Person on the Purple Heart
One of the most famous military medals, the purple heart (given to soldiers wounded or killed while serving) originated back in the 18th century. When the modern medal was modernized in the 20th century, it featured a portrait of George Washington himself.
Fun Fact: Father of This Country, Biological Father to None
While George Washington was a founding father of America, he had no children of his own. Many believe he was sterile when he caught smallpox earlier in his life. He was a step-father to two of Martha Washington’s children from a previous marriage.
