Before being elected as Senator for Maine, Susan Collins ran for the gubernatorial race in that state in 1994. Susan Collins along with her Democratic Challenger lost that election to Independent Angus King.
The State of Maine’s name origin is unclear. Official records believe it was named after the former French province of the same name.
Maine’s capital Augusta is named in the honor of Augusta Dearborn. She was the daughter of Henry Dearborn who was a Revolutionary War hero and a veteran of the War of 1812.
