Ejidos were parcels of land given out by a modernizing Mexico to stem unrest in areas with a poor population. The practice was ended by the 1990s.

Tenochtitlan was the capital of the Aztec Empire in what is now Mexico City. It was built in the middle of a man-made island with pyramids and floating gardens. A great city of wealth, it was destroyed when Spain conquered the Aztec empire.
