Fun Fact: Battle of Maritsa

The Battle of Maritsa was a pivotal point in the early days where Serbia fought the Ottoman Empire. The Serbians greatly outnumbered the Ottomans at the battle but due to Ottoman strategy, they were soundly defeated. Even King VukaĊĦin of Serbia, was killed in the battle. Serbia would eventually become part of the Ottoman Empire.

While tensions were rough between nations, many cite the starting point of World War I when a young man named Gavrilo Princip assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand. This led Austria-Hungary to invade Serbia which in turn caused the conflicts that evolved into World War I.
