Alamandine garnets occur quite frequently in the mines of Sri Lanka and as such as are  nicknamed tge Ceylon Ruby.

The mining of sand actually can push water underground further and this is a problem for farmers in Sri Lanka as it’s more difficult for them to find clean water for crops.
