While lei garlands are a common part of Hawaiian culture/history, there isn’t a standard quo on what can be used for a lei garland. Flowers (real or plastic), vines, leaves, seeds, feathers, teeth, and bones can make up its design.

Once when we were in Maui, My Rare One and I took a class on how to make our own leis out of orchids. It was really neat. We kept the finished leis in the refrigerator crisper of our condo and they lasted for quite a few days. We wore them to various luaus.
