The First Barbary War was a conflict between the United States and states of modern-day North Africa. American merchant ships had been attacked and the United States blamed it on the Eyalet of Tripolitania. One of the greatest victories was the Battle of Derna, where American forces of about 500 men defeated troops of about 4,000 soldiers.
