While many use oil-based paints and primers to cover metal surfaces and they do well at adhesion and rust prevention, they cannot paint over a galvanized metal surface. The zinc in the galvanized metal reacts to the alkyd in the paint/primer and creates a “soapy” film in the process which cause the paint to peel off in very little time. A high quality water based paint and water based primer are highly recommended.
