Robert Peary claimed to have reached the north pole in 1909. However even back then, his claims on exactly how and when he got to certain points didn’t add up. I figure he just got on the ice, marched as far as he wanted, and called it a day. People who tried to recreate his journey over the decades are convinced that Peary did not reach the geographical north pole.
