The province of Manitoba, Canada is believed to have derived from either the Cree word “manitowapow” or the Ojibwa word “manitobau” which both mean “strait of the spirit”.

  1. I learned that it came from the indigenous peoples’ name for the Great Spirit — Gitche Manitou. “Manitoba” (the province where I was born) is often translated as “where the Great Spirit dwells.”
