During World War II”s Battle of Stalingrad, an apartment building was defended by Soviet sergeant Yakov Pavlov and his soldiers. German forces attacked it for two months, but they could not defeat Pavlov before more Soviet troops came in to help. After their success, a general joked that Germany lost more soldiers trying to take Pavlov’s house than they did when they took Paris.
