While still a prince, King Harald V of Norway wanted to marry a commoner named Sonja Haraldsen. This was controversial, but he gave his father a choice. He could either marry Sonja or not marry at all and end the monarchy eventually. His father let him marry Sonja.
Obviously the prince understood the concept of leverage!
