Things I Hate: The Huntsman: Winter’s War (2016 Film)

Back in 2012 there was a movie called Snow White and the Huntsman which had Kristen Stewart in the lead role. The movie was pretty bad, and I didn’t like it much. Kristen Stewart turned down the chance to star in the sequel so they made it just about The Huntsman whose name is Eric. I honestly might of skipped the film but then it included Emily Blunt and Jessica Chastain. I knew it was a bad idea, but could I had been wrong? Can a really bad movie get a decent sequel for a change of pace?

The movie serves as both a prequel and a sequel to the original Snow White and the Huntsman movie. It starts with the Evil Queen Ravenna’s sister Freya being introduced. Unlike her terrible sister, Freya was once very innocent and pure. But she became pregnant by a local nobleman. Her love ends up murdering their newborn daughter, and Freya loses all of her control and freezes him to death with her ice magic. She becomes the Ice Queen and takes her own lands in the north, while leaving her sister’s lands alone. Both Queens respected the other’s lands until only one remained alive. Freya raised The Huntsman in her own army, but he eventually defected and fled which caused the death of her sister.

The reason for the rift between the Ice Queen and Eric was Eric’s beautiful wife Sara. Both Eric and Sara were the strongest warriors in her army with very few being able to stand in the same league. However after Freya’s tragic fall from grace, she made love an impossible trait in her kingdom. When Eric and Sara were discovered to have been married, she had Sara killed in front of Eric’s eyes. Years later, Freya seeks the magic mirror used by her sister. Snow White’s loyal men are aware of it, and seek The Huntman’s aid in keeping it safe. Because if it falls in the icy hands of Freya, she will be unstoppable. Could they possibly lose to an evil queen after destroying her own sister? Or will the heroes win out?

To be honest, I was optimistic about Winter’s War but this movie doesn’t fair much better than its predecessor even with a different director. The Huntsman is not a great character, and it almost feels as dumb as if Game of Thrones made Samwell Tarly the main star. Even so the script is horrible, the action scenes are boring, and the story just drags on. It has a few (and I mean few) moments, but it was just a giant mistake to make a sequel to a movie nobody liked in the first place. The movie did bad at the box office unlike the first film, so it’s more than probable that this will be the last movie in the series.
