Baby M was a custody case involving a traditional surrogacy where the surrogate mother is also the biological mother. Normally in these cases, the surrogate mother gives up her rights in favor of the father’s wife. Instead, she threatened to kill herself to get hold of the child and wouldn’t let her go. The courts ruled in the favor of the father and his wife, and Baby M eventually reached maturity as a woman named Melissa Stern who agreed with her paternal family on the matter.
