Michigan is unique for a US state, as it is completely separated by land. The upper peninsula was basically a prize for Michigan after its militia was used in a dispute with Ohio over Toledo. While Ohio did get what they wanted, Michigan was given its own chunk of land which would have easily would have been part of Wisconsin otherwise.
This is very interesting actually since I lived in Illinois for so long. I didn’t even think about this.
