Depending on the location, a plane might travel over land more than water even going from one continent to the other. Most American flights to Europe will actually travel up the East Coast, go up to Canada, travel over Greenland and Iceland and then reach mainland Europe. There’s two reasons for this, is it gives the airplane the opportunity to emergency land at an airport and in some cases is actually quicker and less mileage because of the curvature of the Earth.
Good to know
I’ve been over the pond and didn’t even know this. Interesting!
