Things I Like: Grandpa Joe (Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory)

While I say I like Grandpa Joe, I will agree with the majority of the internet about how much of a bum he is. He’s definitely got the classic grandfather look, but boy were his priorities rather strange.

Because the Willy Wonka movies suggest that he has been unable to walk for an entire 20 years or something like that and he was bedridden with all of Charlie’s grandparents. With the whole family living in extreme poverty.

He could have been working the last 20 years but decided to stay in bed. His grandson Charlie wins a golden ticket to a chocolate factory and suddenly he’s performing on Broadway…

He serves as the “parent” that Charlie goes with to the Chocolate Factory as they’re only allowed to bring one. He’s quick to notice that all the other children are just brats.

And while it doesn’t happen in the book, he convinces Charlie to drink fizzy lifting drinks. Which technically would make Charlie one of the bad children too, though he would be the only one convinced by his relative to do it.

Luckily Charlie returned the Everlasting Gobstopper and proved he was pure of heart. Which entitled him to the entire factory and the Wonka Legacy. Along with Charlie, it’s suggested that he gets to live at the factory after the movie is over. But I would have put him in the nursing home…
