Things I Like: Glinda (The Wizard of Oz 1939)

Billie Burke as Glinda in The Wizard of Oz 1939 movie

Glinda is a great character in the original Wizard of Oz. Though, she does have her flaws when you think about it. The funny thing is that she’s remembered as a blonde as she’s portrayed in most modern takes on the character. But if you pay attention, she’s very clearly a redhead.

Glinda arrives in a green bubble in The Wizard of Oz 1939 movie Billie Burke

But she shows up in her bubble shortly after Dorothy lands in Oz. The teenaged girl from Kansas accidentally killed the Wicked Witch of the East which sparks her to take a closer look.

And she teaches Dorothy about magic, witches, and most importantly… fashionable shoes.

The one thing that I did not understand was the fact that she did not try to have a magic battle with a Wicked Witch of the West. Despite herself saying that her green rival was powerless in Munchkin Land.

Glinda sends Dorothy Gale back home with the ruby slippers in The Wizard of Oz 1939 movie Billie Burke

But she teaches Dorothy the secret to getting back to Kansas, which is just a click on the heels of the magical ruby slippers and say that she wants to go back home. Wait a minute… Dorothy could have done this for the majority of the movie.

  1. I was very little the first time I saw the movie and I remember thinking, Wait a second! She could have gotten home from the start?!?

  2. I should have known I was gay then when I was a wee one. I was enthralled with Glinda, the bubble, and the hair, big gown and all that pink. But when I think back, she could have been the true villain all along in the movie.

And I could never watch another film with Billie Burke in it without hearing the voice of Glinda.
