Things I Like: Scarecrow (The Wizard of Oz 1939)

Ray Bolger as the Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz 1939 movie

The Scarecrow is one of the most important characters in The Wizard of Oz. But that being said, out of the main three friends… he’s actually my least favorite.

Dorothy meets him first and finds out that he doesn’t have a brain. If the Scarecrow was alive in 2024, he most likely would have voted for Donald Trump.

And as the first friend to be found, he was the one encounted the most danger. He ironically seemed to be more afraid than the Cowardly Lion.

Scarecrow lit on fire by the Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz 1939 movie Ray Bolger

But it is the Wicked Witch of the West trying to set him on fire that sparked Dorothy to grab the water to douse the flames. Which accidentally killed the Wicked Witch of the West. But if you’ve ever seen the musical Wicked, the twist on the story actually makes sense here.

Scarecrow getting an honorary diploma ending in The Wizard of Oz 1939 movie Ray Bolger

And when they actually meet the real wizard of Oz, the non-magical con man tells him that he actually can’t give him a brain. But he can give him an honorary degree, probably from a school with more respect than Trump University.
