When Gene Roddenberry came up with Star Trek, the original idea for the ship’s name was the S.S. Yorktown and its captain was named Robert April and eventually a Captain Pike. Lloyd Bridges was offered a major role in the show that turned it down after not having much enthusiasm about being in sci-fi.
