Things I Like: Tin Man (The Wizard of Oz 1939)

Jack Haley as the Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz 1939 movie

The Tin Man is one of my favorite characters in The Wizard of Oz. I actually played him in a middle school production of this movie, so I might be a little biased.

Tin Man found rusted in the forest by the beautiful Dorothy Gale in The Wizard of Oz 1939 movie Jack Haley

He’s the second main friend that Dorothy comes across and he was immobilized from rust. Which happens way too easily during the movie. They weren’t even near the ocean.

Tin Man vs the Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz 1939 movie Jack Haley

I do think it was funny that he was originally scared by the Cowardly Lion’s tough guy routine. The Tin Man had an axe, my money would be on him.

Tin Man and Scarecrow protect Dorothy Gale from The Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz 1939 movie Jack Haley

Like his two counterparts, he was very loyal to Dorothy Gale. Even admitting that even if he doesn’t get the heart he wants, he hopes Dorothy to be happy and return back home to Kansas.

Tin Man gets his heart from the Wizard of Oz at the end of the story in The Wizard of Oz 1939 movie Jack Haley

And when they find out that the Wizard of Oz is just some dude without magic, he gets a very artificial heart that doesn’t really matter. But he does become one of the rulers of Oz when the wizard leaves, so not a bad ending for him.
