Things I Like: Dorothy Gale (The Wizard of Oz 1939)

Judy Garland as Dorothy Gale in The Wizard of Oz 1939 movie

Dorothy Gale is obviously the most important character in The Wizard of Oz. And it’s very hard to hate her. In the books and a lot of Oz stories, Dorothy Gale was actually a little kid. But I definitely prefer the version where she’s practically a woman.

I never quite cared for the scenes in Kansas, as they’re just kind of sad and depressing.

But I definitely sympathize with her wanting to keep her dog alive. Which definitely was a challenge in a magical world of witches and beasts.

Another thing is this movie changed the magical slippers. As they were originally supposed to be silver, which would make sense against the yellow brick road of gold. And it would seem that they were going to try to do this, but found out that these ruby slippers looked a lot better against the golden brick road on camera.

It is amazing that she somehow defeated two wicked witches by killing them both and accidentally too.

She honestly had to do a lot to get that one-way ticket home.

It is kind of messed up that she could have gone back to Kansas technically if she had just wished upon the ruby slippers. But she was just a chess piece for Glenda, I suppose.

And she wakes back up in Kansas and everybody thinks she had a silly little dream.
