Like many people, Robin Williams was one of my favorite actors of all time. Ever since this tragic death, I’ve been meaning to watch almost every movie he’s been in. I actually started One Hour Photo two years ago and then they took it off Hulu before I finished… and they finally put it back on Hulu again.

The movie was made and set in the early 2000s when one hour photo development places were still a thing. Robin Williams plays Seymour “Sy” Parrish, a very lonely man who lives by himself in an apartment. He has no friends and dedicates his entire existence to his work at a WalMart-ish place.

But Sy has a clear favorite set of customers with the Yorkin family. They know Sy about as well as any retail customer who frequent the same place. As they always get their family photos developed at his work.

But they have no idea that Sy is literally obsessed with the family, despite being very low-key about it. He’s even so deluded about it that he fantasizes about being one of the family, an Uncle Sy of the honorary sort.

Robin Williams had already won an Oscar by the time of 2002, but I’m surprised he didn’t get nominated again for this role. There’s so many different emotions and feelings with his character and it’s definitely a marvelous acting job by Robin Williams.

One Hour Photo is not the greatest movie that Robin Williams has ever been in but it’s definitely a very interesting and screwed up thriller. Often we think of Robin Williams with the comedies, but he does the dark just as well as he delights in the light.
