After the Islamic conquest of Egypt, the city of Alexandria hit a massive decline and when Napoleon reached the city it was really nothing more than a small fishing village until it was revived in the 19th century. Centuries of war, natural disasters, and tragedy had basically destroyed what remained of the original ancient city.
