Things I Like: Mia Wallace (Pulp Fiction)

Uma Thurman as Mia Wallace Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction 1994 movie

Mia Wallace is technically the character on the most famous Pulp Fiction movie poster by Quentin Tarantino. However, she’s not nearly as important to the story as that poster might suggest. This was the first time Uma Thurman worked with Quentin Tarantino, but this role pales in comparison to her performance as the Bride, Beatrix Kiddo, in Kill Bill.

Mia is the wife of the gangster Marcellus Wallace, though they don’t seem like a great fit as a couple. However, the movie suggests that they do genuinely love each other — or at least that Marcellus really loves her.

In Pulp Fiction, we mainly see her going on a platonic date with Vincent Vega, which was ordered to keep her happy and entertained.

She also has a serious drug problem, which is surprising given that her gangster husband either didn’t know about it or didn’t care to intervene.

Mia nearly dies from an overdose until Vincent Vega miraculously saves her with the help of some friends. She’s a likable character, but that situation was definitely not cool — especially since it could have gotten Vincent into serious trouble if she had died.

I like her and hate her at the same time. Definitely wouldn’t be her friend, but I’d spy on her shenanigans if I were her neighbor for the sheer fascination of her life.
