Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird book was controversial when it was first released, especially in the American South. Conservatives had the book banned in a lot of school districts with many of them calling it “immoral literature.” In the 21st century, Harper Lee was honored by both President George W. Bush and President Barack Obama with awards for her contributions to literature.
