Things I Hate: Vernita Green (Kill Bill)

Vivica A. Fox as Vernita Green in Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill franchise

Vernita Green is a character in Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill franchise. Of everyone on the Hit List, she was definitely my least favorite.

Out of all of Bill’s most notable assassins, she seems to have the least amount of backstory. I’m also pretty sure she was the only one in the main group who was never confirmed to have wielded a katana. But I guess it’s safe to assume she did.

Since she was directly responsible for what happened at the wedding chapel in Texas, she ends up on the Hit List. She’s the first one we see the Bride take down on screen, although chronologically this fight happens after the death of O-Ren Ishii.

I never quite understood why the Bride attacked her the way she did. She didn’t use a gun or a katana—just fists. It turned into a brutal hand-to-hand fight that escalated as they used whatever they could get their hands on. The fight ends in a stalemate when Vernita’s daughter comes home from school unexpectedly.

Vernita then tries to shoot Beatrix Kiddo by hiding a gun inside a cereal box, but she misses. The Bride retaliates by throwing a knife into Vernita’s chest, killing her instantly. It’s a decent fight, but probably my least favorite in the entire franchise. I think Vernita was a wasted character with a lot of untapped potential.
