What Women Want was a movie I wasn’t old enough to appreciate in theaters, but I remember catching it on TV a few years later. In 2000, Mel Gibson was still at the height of his career—before Gibson went totally and absolutely bonkers.

Gibson plays Nick, a Chicago advertising executive who certainly doesn’t struggle with the ladies.

But after a bizarre accident, he gains a “superpower” worthy of the Avengers—LOL.

Suddenly, he involuntarily hears the inner thoughts of every woman around him (and, in a few comedic moments, the private musings of foreign speakers and even animals).

He gleefully exploits this gift—landing a date with Marisa Tomei’s character, for instance. What single man wouldn’t be tempted to misuse such an ability?

His true romantic focus, however, is Helen Hunt’s character—another star at the peak of her career back then. I honestly can’t recall the last film I saw her in.

I don’t remember every detail of the plot, but I do remember enjoying it. In hindsight, it’s funny that Gibson was once considered one of the “sexiest men alive.” Is he really what women want? Maybe—if what they want is to be in an abusive relationship…
