Marina del Rey is an unincorporated seaside community located in Los Angeles County, California. Officially completed in 1965, its name translates from Spanish as “Marina of the King.”
Home to approximately 5,000 boats, The Los Angeles Times has described it as perhaps the greatest recreational resource in the county. It also holds the distinction of being the largest man-made small-craft harbor in North America.
Before its development, the area was a marshy expanse known as the Ballona Lagoon.
One of the marina’s notable attractions is Fisherman’s Village, a charming area designed in the style of a New England coastal town. Visitors can rent boats, dine at waterfront restaurants, and enjoy a variety of leisure activities
It’s not uncommon for yacht owners to live aboard their vessels in Marina del Rey, effectively transforming their luxury boats into floating homes.
We lived there in the early ’80s. Back then, it was just some upscale apartment complexes along the marina and nothing but oil derricks between us and the beach.
Lovely place
