Not Another Teen Movie was definitely one of those early 2000’s comedies that critics hated, but it still managed to gain a bit of a cult following. It was obvious they were trying to recreate the success of the Scary Movie parody franchise—but this time with a different target: teen movies.

This parody casts a wide net. Nearly every iconic teen movie from the ’80s and ’90s that was even remotely popular is referenced in some way. Whether it was The Breakfast Club, She’s All That, or 10 Things I Hate About You, this movie throws it all into the blender.

It was also one of the first notable roles for Chris Evans, who would later go on to don the mantle of Captain America.

If there’s a central character, it’s definitely Janey Briggs—a parody of the “pretty but ugly girl” stereotype found in countless romantic comedies. Her scene with the birthday toy (you know the one) remains one of the most memorable moments of the entire film.

Jaime Pressly also had a role here before her career took off. While she’s not exactly at her peak anymore, I think of her as the Dollar Tree version of Margot Robbie today.

One highlight was getting Paul Gleason to reprise his role as Richard “Dick” Vernon. Even though the Breakfast Club parody scene wasn’t particularly hilarious.

It’s easy to see why critics trashed it back then—it’s crude, over-the-top, and often hits more groans than laughs. But it’s aged decently, with some scenes becoming immortalized as memes and GIFs.
