A Night at the Roxbury is a movie I did not see in 1998 because I was only 10 years old and too young for it. But as I became a preteen, I started getting into Saturday Night Live, and I remember the sketches with Will Ferrell and Chris Kattan. It really helped make everybody aware of the song “What Is Love,” and I eventually remember catching the movie on something like Comedy Central.

The original SNL skit was always one of my favorites. Not nearly as much as Celebrity Jeopardy, but it had its own really odd charm. The way the guys danced with women probably would have been blown way out of proportion by Generation Z today.

Like a lot of the Saturday Night Live movies based on sketches, though, they had to expand the concept quite a bit, including establishing that the characters were even named Doug and Steve Butabi.

A lot of my memories of the movie are kind of fuzzy, but even though it was based on the SNL sketch, they obviously could not spend an hour and a half just showing them awkwardly dancing in clubs and getting rejected. In some ways, it also feels a little inspired by Dumb and Dumber with the goofy duo dynamic between the brothers.

It also has a little in common with Will Ferrell’s later movie Step Brothers. The Butabi brothers are awkward, incompetent, and weird, while their dad is a successful businessman who owns a flower shop. Despite having an easy job practically handed to them, the two are such imbeciles that they struggle to even operate a cash register.

At the end of the day, I would not blame anybody for disliking or even hating this movie. Still, I always thought it was a decent comedy and far from the worst film to come from a Saturday Night Live sketch. At the very least, it gave Will Ferrell some valuable movie experience before the long and acclaimed career that was about to take off for him.
