Things I Like: Oleg Golishevsky (2 Broke Girls)

Close-up of diner cook Oleg Golishevsky (played by Jonathan Kite) wearing a zebra-print tank top, a gold chain necklace, and a white paper chef's hat as he looks through the kitchen order window on 2 Broke Girls.

Oleg Golishevsky is one of the most memorable characters on the television sitcom 2 Broke Girls. I was actually surprised that the actor who plays him is American and doesn’t really talk like that out of character. Much like Cotton Hill from King of the Hill, on paper this guy should be totally unlikable, but this Ukrainian is just so oddly charming and funny.

Diner chef Oleg Golishevsky (Jonathan Kite) wearing a red tank top and white chef's hat, leaning over the counter next to plate of food while Caroline Channing (Beth Behrs) stands nearby looking skeptical in her yellow waitress uniform on 2 Broke Girls.

He is the line cook at the diner where Max and Caroline work, and if you think television is unrealistic, this is probably one of the most realistic parts ever shown on TV. Line cooks are not universally one way or another, but there are definitely a lot of line cooks like Oleg, regardless of nationality.

Max Black (played by Kat Dennings) in her yellow and red diner waitress uniform smiling while preparing a pie, as chef Oleg Golishevsky (Jonathan Kite) in a black mesh tank top and dirty white apron watches her from the kitchen on 2 Broke Girls.

He is an absolute and total pervert. He has absolutely no shame, a very questionable fashion sense, and it’s very confusing how he was ever able to land any woman at all. I don’t exactly blame him for shooting his shot with Max, but his chances were not at zero percent. They were somehow in the negative percentages.

Then, in a strange way, he ends up in a romantic relationship with Sophie. It kind of makes sense since they have similar cultural backgrounds, with her being Polish and him being Ukrainian. But I’m still a little surprised she was drawn to him like a magnet. Then again, they do seem to match each other mentally on some level.

While their relationship was rocky, much like any other sitcom couple, they eventually tied the knot. I wasn’t exactly as happy for them as I was for Monica and Chandler on Friends, but I didn’t hate it either.

A shocked Oleg Golishevsky (played by Jonathan Kite) wearing a leopard print t-shirt, zebra-patterned pants, and a gold medallion, looking down in surprise at Sophie Kachinsky (Jennifer Coolidge) holding their newborn baby in a hospital bed on 2 Broke Girls.

What really shocked me was the fact that Sophie and Oleg managed to have a baby naturally, giving birth to a little daughter. I guess that’s kind of karma for Oleg because he would presumably become protective of her against men like himself when she’s grown. But I was always glad for the laughs he gave me.
