The state of Delaware, along with a bay and river of the same name are named after Englishman Thomas West. He was the 3rd Baron of De La Warr.

Fun Fact: The Problem With Washington Crossing the Delaware Artwork

While Washington Crossing the Delaware is one of the most iconic paintings related to American history, it was not painted by anyone present at the river. An artist named Emanuel Leutze actually painted it in 1851. Because of this, there are a few historical inaccuracies, such as an American flag that did not yet exist.

Fun Fact: President of Delaware?

While Joshua Clayton was the tenth person to be Governor of Delaware, he was the first person to be called Governor. Before then, the office was known as the President of Delaware. Ironically as of 2021, no President of the United States has been born in Delaware.
