For about a century, Venice had a monopoly on mirror production. The cost of them were insane, as royals and nobles would be paying the price of ships and farms for one single mirror. Venetian mirror makers would be assassinated if they tried to leave Venice and leak secrets. France eventually did steal the secrets and the price of mirrors dropped tremendously.
