Sonic the Hedgehog has been a part of the childhood of many millennials and probably the majority of Generation Z as well. Talks of a Sonic the Hedgehog movie have been around since the early 90s. When Paramount originally showed the trailer, fans universally rejected how Sonic looked and they had to spend a whole year almost to fix the issue. But was all that work worth it?

Since Sonic the Hedgehog had never been a very story-driven game, most of what’s in the movie is rather made up by the script writers in general. In this version, Sonic is actually an alien from a different planet, being sent to Earth when he was still a baby.

Sonic spent most of his life on the West Coast of the United States. Keeping himself hidden from mankind, while still having his own fun. His favorite human is a police officer he had dubbed as the Donut Lord. He has to ask the human for help when the government comes looking for him.

And the government hired the smartest man in the world named Dr. Robotnik to chase after Sonic. While his intelligence is unquestionable, his insanity is not. And this evil genius is not going to give up his quest without a fight.

Last year I had seen a lot of positive buzz about Sonic the Hedgehog. But I found it rather disappointing after that little bit of hype. It does many things right, but it’s really not that special. It being good for a video game movie, just means it’s okay as a regular movie.

Score: C+
